The Power of Happy: 10 Tips to Improve Your Mood!

I spend a lot of time talking about maintaining a positive attitude.  But recently several  people shared that they are going through really hard times:  a sick loved one without health insurance, a partner without work creating money problems or insecurity over employment.

There are times when life can overwhelm our happiness.  How do we maintain happiness in the face of overwhelming negative circumstances?

Benjamin Franklin said “The Constitution only guarantees the American people the right to pursue happiness.  You have to catch it yourself.”

So how do we catch it?

  1. Attitude change.  Many scientists theorize that we have the power to catch happiness.  In fact, often we are the cause of our own unhappiness.  How often do we take the negative spin on an event—be it an election, a co-worker’s action or a series of red lights.  When you feel a rush of negativity stop and ask yourself what the positive side of the event is.
  2. Watch your self talk—the majority of what we tell ourselves is negative.  Self talk is the chatter that goes on inside ourselves; it is how we talk to ourselves.  Know that you can handle everything that comes your way.  When you own this attitude and learn to trust your ability, you will see these difficult situations as a challenge instead of as a threat.  Do your thoughts make you happy?
  3. Practice gratitude.  When I feel a funk coming on, I stop and start listing all of the things that make me thankful—no matter how small.  I am amazed at how quickly I snap out of it.  No matter how bleak the horizon, I always discover that I have a long list.
  4. So life isn’t fair—or is it?  Several years ago my brother pointed to a neighbor’s beautiful house with two luxury cars parked in the drive and commented, “They are golden.  Nothing bad has ever happened to them.”  I suspect that we all have trials and tribulations that will make us who we are supposed to become.  Some of us had our ‘classes’ early; others will have to go to summer school.  If you are going through a trial right now, ask yourself, “Okay, what am I supposed to learn from this” and then get the lesson done!  Who wants a retest?
  5. I am responsible for my HAPPY!  Own it.  The next big promotion, gift, etc. will not make you happy.  If you are not happy now, no job, thing or person will make you happy.  What can you do for yourself that will enhance your happiness?
  6. Live in the now.  There has been a lot of writing about practicing mindfulness and living in the now.  It really is powerful.  Let tomorrow unfold and quit worrying about what you didn’t do or what you did to screw up today.  We always have a second chance, you can’t change the past, enjoy today and tomorrow will unfold.
  7. Think of others.  Get out of our head and focus on someone else.  Helping others puts your problems in perspective and increases your happiness.
  8. Find meaning in your life.  What gives you purpose?  People who are strongly spiritual are better able to cope with difficulties and are generally happier.
  9. Expect the best.  You get what you expect.  If you expect the worst you will rarely be disappointed.
  10. Be kind to yourself.  Practice some good habits:
    1. Get enough sleep.  Most of us cheat our sleep to get more done.  However, our lack of sleep often impedes quick or quality work.
    2. Find something to laugh at.  Researchers at the University of California did a study in which a group of men watched a funny video.  Their levels of stress hormones dropped significantly while their pleasure-inducing endorphin levels rose 27 percent and growth hormone levels rose 87 percent.
    3. Do one thing at a time.  Most of us are proud of our ability to multi task; however, studies show that this increases our blood pressure.
    4. Say no to activities that you do not enjoy.  This will relieve you of the added stress and free up more time to do what makes you happy.
    5. Build and participate in community.  Numerous studies have shown that those of us with an active social circle are happier and more fulfilled.
    6. Minimized the ‘little boxes’ in your life.  My friend, Theresa Rose (http://www.theresarose.net), talks about getting rid of life’s time-wasters:  television, cell phones, computers, video games, etc.  Not only do these things sap your energy (she refers to them as ‘Mojo-busters’), they rob you of your most precious gift:  time.  (And while you are at it, skip the news for a while.  Have you ever noticed what a downer that is?)
    7. Breathe deeply and get outside:  bike, hike or garden.  If you have a dog, walk it.  Did you know that pets buffer stress better than spouses do?  Aromatherapy can be beneficial too.  (Rosemary makes you more alert and lowers your anxiety.  Lavender increases the brain waves that indicate heightened relaxation.)
    8. Do things to reduce stress in your life (exercise, expressing creativity, maintaining supportive friendships, keep an organized home—a refuge or safe place, etc.)

We know that maintaining a positive attitude is important.  Take some time to soak in some of these tips so you can avoid falling into a negative funk.  A bad attitude will cost you money, relationships and time.  Don’t be like the author Colette who said, “What a wonderful life I’ve had!  I only wish I’d realized it sooner.”

Lack of Motivation? Leasing Stalled? How to Change Your Tune

All this talk about a depression, soft market and price drops. OH MY! Not to mention pay freezes, working twice as hard for half as much traffic, it’s not a wonder that there is a lack of motivation out there. How do we change this and re-invigorate our teams, win leases, and enjoy our jobs once again? The apartment industry is an awesome industry – how do we stop singing the blues and bring that skip back into our step?

If you talk to my friends, business partners and co-workers, they will tell you I am a HAPPY person, always with a smile, a laugh, sunshine in my eyes, and a skip in my step. How do I keep the skip in my step, even in the midst of all this bad news?

It’s as simple as changing your tune – literally.

Have you ever noticed when you walk into a fitness facility, there’s upbeat booty-shaking music piped through the gym? Or visit a spa, and they have relaxing music with wind chimes or the sound of water? Different retailers like Gap, Express, The Limited all have specific soundtracks they play in their retail stores. At Nordstrom’s, depending on the department you are standing in, there is different music – all eliciting a different mood.

(Picture provided by William Hamon on Flickr through Creative Commons license.)

Music is one of those things that can instantly put YOU in a different mood. If you’re in a bad mood – why not change your tune and get into a GOOD mood? Feeling a little slow? Put on some finger-snapping upbeat music and see how long you stay groggy. Feeling like nothing is going your way? Listen to something that lifts you UP. Change your tune, change your mindset, and see where it takes you!

Here are a couple of my favorite mood enhancing tracks:

If I just need to get moving in the morning, Gigi D’Agostino’s La Passion gets me going! (actually, anything Techno can do that to you!)

Disney’s Hakuna Matata always makes me laugh.

Hawaiian Iz’s Somewhere Over the Rainbow is uplifting…

If I need to add some attitude to my day, I listen to Michael Jackson’s Beat It.

If I have a LONG project, OR if I’m coming into a tough meeting and need some motivation, I listen to Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger.

When dealing with tough situations or dramatic people, I listen to Craig David’s I’m Walking Away. (I DO come back to address the problem, but it’s nice to know you can walk away – at least for a little bit!)

I listen to these songs while I’m getting ready for my day, in the car, where ever I can, or whenever I need a quick change in tune.

We normally associate mood-alteration with drugs – why not music?

I recently wrote an article about setting intentions. In conjunction with setting your intentions for a successful day, a successful week, and a successful career. Music is one of those small adjustments you can make to GET you in the right positive frame of mind to GET THERE. You can read my article on setting intentions here.

What do you listen to that changes you mood and sets the tone for a productive day?

Personnel/Personal Development: Do You Have a Plan?

When it come to personnel development – do you have a plan?

How about PERSONAL development – do you have a plan?

Success comes from within. For an organization to be successful, in order for your apartment project to be successful, the success must come from within. At the very heart of each project, at the heart of every organization, there are people. In today’s market, the only way to THRIVE, not just SURVIVE, is to have a vested interest in the one thing that sets YOUR organization apart from the next. YOU and YOUR people. Processes, technologies, even buildings can be duplicated. The one thing that can NOT be duplicated is YOU and YOUR people. If this is the one thing that sets your organization apart from the next, do you have a VESTED interest in yourself?A VESTED interest in your people? So the question is:

When it come to personnel development – do you have a plan?

How about PERSONAL development – do you have a plan?

“If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.”

Land of Opportunity or BUST! Do You See the Land of Opportunity?

Have you ever noticed the people who complain about the lack of opportunities are also the ones that are the first to say they are too busy to join, have too much work to do, can’t take on another project, and are the ones turning away perfectly good opportunities? Complain, complain, complain, blah, blah, blah. If I were ole “Opportunity,” I would knock on another door too.

(Picture provided by Dominic’s Pics on Flickr through Creative Commons license.)

How can you position yourself to invite more opportunity?

1. Stop Complaining. Not only is this a negative, unproductive opportunity, you can’t hear when opportunity DOES knock.

2. Choose one of the following statements for the day:

A. I make things happen!

B. Things happen to me.

Hopefully, you chose option A. You’re one step closer to inviting more opportunity! If you have chosen B, there’s no one who can help you. Go back to bed. Wake up tomorrow and choose A.

3. HELP yourself. If there is a lack of opportunity in your life, stop and figure out WHY. Take some responsibility on WHY you are in this situation – and take a step to move yourself OUT of the situation. If it’s because you don’t have a degree, sign up for 1 class. Small step, but BOY, you’d be 1 class closer to a degree than you were yesterday. If you’re looking for a job, and the only place you are looking is on monster.com – you’re missing out on the majority of the job market. Most jobs never hit the classifieds! (CNNMoney.com reports over 80% of jobs are never advertised.) Figure out what you’re missing and find a way to GET IT! Stop finding excuses, start finding solutions. Make it YOUR business to be IN business. ENGAGE yourself fully!

4. Forgive yourself for any mistakes, and know that YOU are WORTHY of success beyond your wildest dreams. Most people sabotage themselves – the reason most people don’t succeed isn’t for lack of trying, its lack of belief in themselves. My favorite quote, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re usually right.” (Henry Ford) Why not be right about your success?

How does this apply to our apartment industry?

With this economy, so many people are singing the blues. I GET IT. It’s a tough market. So what? We’re all in this market together. If both you & I are operating in the same market, all’s fair. Go through steps 1-4 not only for yourself, but for your apartment community, for your team, for your career, for your staff. Stop complaining about the market and making excuses. Start finding solutions. Engage in your community’s success. Participate and engage in your community. Forgive yourself, your staff for not being able to run it like it WAS, and run your apartment community the way you CAN, and not the way you CAN’T.

Winston Churchill said, ”

“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”

Do you see difficulties or opportunities in your future? Do you see the Land of Opportunity?

My Charmed Life

I will be the first to admint – I live a CHARMED life. A wonderful, gorgeous, although somewhat nerdy boyfriend (but I SOOO have a thing for nerds!), beautiful kids, weekends spent with wonderful friends, shopping, SHOES, SHOES, and more SHOES, and JEWELRY JEWELRY JEWELRY! Charmed, and I LOVE my life.

I have been lucky enough to be appointed onto the Board of Directors to a local non-profit organization called, Aeon. They provide Affordable Housing for people in need. As you know, I work in the housing industry – for what I call “not so affordable housing.” Essentially, my firm provides luxury housing. My first board meeting was last night.

I wanted to join the Board for many reasons, one of them being: I feel I live a charmed life. And its time for me to give back. I was not aware of how profoundly one board meeting would hit me. I was most moved by the commitments Aeon had made to help homeless youths (teenagers) in the twin cities. These are the people you will NOT see on 90210 or the Hills – although their stories are much more interesting, heart warming and many times tragic.

Did you know:

That there are homeless teenagers in the City of Minneapolis? AND that the most common reasons for them to be homeless are:
1.) Parents have disowned/abandoned them for being gay.
2.) Parents have disowned/abandoned them for being pregnant.
3.) At some point in time, most homeless youths have directly or indirectly sold themselves (sex) in order to stay off the streets?

WHAT? I didn’t even realize that such a thing existed – parents abandoning teenagers? Some how, I have been living my life oblivious to this issue. In my home, I still (albeit sporadically) pack a “hello kitty” lunch box for my 14 year old (high school) daughter, because it brings her comfort to have a lunch packed by mom.

Yes, I do live a charmed life. I was horrified at these circumstances. I WANTED to do more, some how, NEEDED to do more. And then I realized. I am doing exactly what I was meant to be doing, seeing exactly what I was meant to be seeing, and feeling exactly what I was meant to feel, and that I AM doing something. I am participating and engaging and acknowledging that there IS a problem, and that I, all 5’2 of me, CAN be a part of the solution.

To find out more about Aeon and their mission, please visit http://www.aeonmn.org – I’m not asking for money or for donations. Just asking that you, like me, to become aware and acknowledge there is a problem so that the need an be addressed.

AND, if you are as moved as I am, and feel YOU live a charmed life, please join me Aeon’s next “Building Dreams” presentation. (Again, no, we are not asking for money or donations) For more information on the “Building Dreams” presentation, visit http://aeonmn.org/bd.aspx – click on “Upcoming Dates – Register.” Be ready to BE MOVED.

Tell me how you feel about the 3 facts I outlined above!
